Canberra, 22 June 2022: The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) is committed to supporting diversity and creating more inclusive communities. In particular, ALIA notes the important role that Australian libraries and information services play supporting and celebrating Australia’s LGBTQIA+ community.
Library collections, programs and services cater for all members of the library community. Throughout the year and during Pride Month, Australian libraries and information services run programs and exhibitions that celebrate, explore and share the stories of LGBTQIA+ people. From Rainbow Storytimes, special displays, and social media campaigns, through to oral histories and staff training, these activities are a valued part of our library services and underpin a vibrant, healthy and inclusive community.
Enabling an inclusive environment where differences are valued and all individuals are treated fairly and with courtesy, dignity and respect is part of ALIA’s Professional Conduct Statement. ALIA recognises that for some groups in our community, such as LGBTQIA+ people, collections, programs and services have not always been as inclusive and representative as they should have been. It is in this context, that we reiterate our commitment to ensuring that libraries provide inclusive and safe environments for all individuals, including LGBTQIA+ people.
