NLS aims to provide a low cost and high value symposium specifically geared towards students and new professionals from around the country. The inspiring event allowed future movers and shakers of the Australian LIS industry to come together and discuss future possibilities and ways to get there. NLSX encourages attendees to exchange knowledge, to explore ideas and to expand their professional circle, and their thinking.
The ALIA NLSX theme is “eXchange, eXplore, eXpand'.
eXchange: The symposium will provide opportunities for exchanging knowledge across the GLAMR sector, across generations and across social barriers.
eXplore: Presenters and delegates will be encouraged to explore challenging, emerging and innovative ideas and step outside their comfort zones.
eXpand: Opportunities will be provided for delegates to expand their professional networks while broadening their horizons and looking beyond their own experiences.

Holden Sheppard is an award-winning West Australian author. His novel Invisible Boys (Fremantle Press, 2019) won multiple accolades, including the 2019 WA Premier's Prize for an Emerging Writer. In 2020, it was shortlisted for the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards and named a Notable Book by the Children’s Book Council of Australia. The novel is now in development as a TV series.
Holden’s second novel The Brink was published by Text Publishing in August 2022. His writing has been published in WA Today, 10 Daily, Griffith Review, the Huffington Post, Westerly, and other journals, books and anthologies. Holden graduated with Honours from Edith Cowan University’s Writing program and won a prestigious Australia Council grant in 2015. He is Deputy Chair of Writing WA.
When he’s not writing, Holden works out at the gym and plays footy. He lives in Perth with his husband.

After moving to Australia from Scotland as a teenager, Catherine commenced her professional career in public libraries and following experience in school and special libraries in the UK, has worked in academic libraries for over 20 years at both The University of Western Australia and Curtin University. Her leadership roles have focused on the design and delivery of library, learning and IT services across a range of portfolio areas. Catherine has also enjoyed working with archival collections at UWA and as Director of the John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library.
Additional leadership roles Catherine has undertaken have included: Member of the Board of the Council of Australian University Librarians and Program Director for the Advancing Open Scholarship Program; Chair of the Aurora Foundation, an international organisation committed to providing development opportunities for emerging leaders in Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums sectors; Member of the Curtin University Council, the University’s governing authority, Chair of the Libraries of the ATN Universities Executive Group and Member of the National and State Libraries Australasia Board.
In 2017, Catherine was honoured to be recognised with the Excellence in Leadership Award from the Australian and New Zealand Association for Tertiary Education Management.

Run down: We’ll put the keynotes up on the big screen then everyone can attend the streams on their own computers. We’ll have mingling time in between streams. We’re not providing food, but there’s plenty of good cafes in the area.

There is no cap on the number of hours you can claim - the total is simply the number of hours that you can spend actively learning and engaging in the conference content.
