Course Overview

The library catalogue is a list of resources to which a library can provide access and is an important finding tool for users. This beginner’s course will help you:

• identify the types of information in a catalogue record
• understand how a catalogue record is created
• understand how to use this knowledge to increase your searching success in bibliographic databases

Course Content

The following topics will be covered:

• Overview of cataloguing, record structures and the language of cataloguing
• Introduction to cataloguing standards - Resource Description and Access (RDA), International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD), and MARC (machine-readable cataloguing) format of bibliographic data
• Introduction to descriptive elements in a catalogue record
• Introduction to structured search terms (controlled, authorised name and subject headings)

On the successful completion of this course, students receive a Certificate of Participation.

This four-week course is designed for complete beginners and as an introduction to the course: Cataloguing for practitioners - intensive practical cataloguing course. (Planned delivery of this course to commence Semester 1 2024 and based on the unit of competency BSBINS516 Undertake cataloguing activities.)

Work in the library and information sector and / or have an interest in cataloguing and wish to develop a greater understanding of cataloguing practices.

Course Delivery

Contact with facilitators will be through online forums on Moodle (the online Learning Management System used by TAFE NSW for these courses).

Participants will connect with each other through forum discussions.

There are no specific times you need to be available.

The time investment required is approximately 5 hours per week, depending on the individual.

The course is designed to be completed in 4 weeks but as it is developed to be self paced, it is possible to finish a little earlier or later depending on your learning styles and needs. However, if you wish to vary the usual time taken, please discuss this with your teacher.
